Can AI Save Studios?

Ben Affleck seems to think so

Ben Affleck, at the 2024 CNBC Delivering Alpha summit, discussed how AI will transform the film industry by reducing production costs and automating visual effects creation. He doesn’t believe that AI has the creative spirit to replace human filmmakers. He does think that AI could open new revenue streams through custom content generation, potentially replacing lost DVD sales and providing a much needed cash injection to studios.

Lightricks has launched LTX Video (LTXV), an open-source AI model that can generate high-quality video in real-time. LTXV aims to challenge the proprietary models of its closed source competitors and hopes to foster widespread adoption. Their model not only offers speed and efficiency on consumer hardware but also supports scalability for longer videos.

Background: The generative AI video market is dominated by proprietary systems including Runway and Hailuo, limiting access and innovation for smaller companies and researchers.

Looking Ahead: Lightricks hopes LTXV as an open-source solution, makes AI video generation accessible to all, and encourages community-driven improvements to allow for a broader range of stories to be told.

YouTube has enhanced its Shorts platform by introducing the ability to generate AI-powered video backgrounds through the Dream Screen feature, which was previously limited to static images. This update, powered by Google DeepMind's Veo, allows creators to craft dynamic, cinematic-style backgrounds from text prompts, a feature not yet available on competing platforms like TikTok.

Problem: Creators often face limitations in content creation due to the lack of dynamic background options, which can affect the visual appeal and engagement of their videos, especially when compared to competitors offering only static backgrounds.

Solution: YouTube's Dream Screen now integrates Veo, enabling creators to input text prompts to generate video backgrounds, thus enhancing the creative potential and viewer engagement by offering more immersive and visually rich content.

Marissa Mayer, drawing from her extensive experience in digital advertising, suggests a future where AI chatbots could revolutionize ad integration by providing highly detailed, user-specific information directly from advertisers, enhancing the relevance and effectiveness of ads. I view this as having the most potential for FAST providers but they are limited in what data they can currently share with advertisers.

Problem: Current advertising models often fail to meet the precise and personalized information needs of consumers, leading to less effective ad engagements.

Solution: Mayer proposes a model where advertisers share more data with AI platforms, enabling these systems to deliver tailored, real-time information like exact seat locations and prices for events.
